    Responsibilities

    BRIC is seeking to fill an Archaeologist position out of the Albuquerque, New Mexico office. This is a full time, project specific position  intended for a qualified individual with experience in Southwestern archaeology and permitted in the Dinetah region

     

    Position Overview: The Project Archaeologist works closely with the PI and Cultural Resource Program Director and is responsible for the oversight and direction of archaeological field investigations, implementing established field procedures, and ensuring all findings are documented in accordance with the applicable Federal and State standards and guidelines. The candidate for this position must be permitted by the NM BLM in the Dinetah Region. The individual must be capable of directing all levels of fieldwork, must work well with others, and must be able to write technical reports and prepare appropriate maps. Project assignments will involve directing field projects, coordinating artifact analyses, and preparing project reports. The selected individual should be able to work on assignments at various locations in the Southwest and Northern Plains. Successful candidates should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized, able to take direction, give instructions, work with diverse personalities, and contribute to a team. Frequent travel and remote locations are expectation for this position. The first project is located in the Farmington NM area.


    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    * Perform and oversee all technical aspects of field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production consistent with BLM and SHPO standards
    *Documentation of all sites within the APE including revisiting and updating any previously recorded sites, and provide eligibility recommendations for all recorded resources
    *Work closely with all staff regarding project work, scheduling, and data exchange
    *Work closely with the client and the BLM to adjust proposed project impacts as needed
    * Report production, and report review
    * Performs data entry related to archeological artifact and project data (e.g., artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc.) into automated systems, appropriate forms, and archival records

     

     

    Qualifications

    Skills Required: 

    BLM Dinetah Permit required


    • Ten years of demonstrated professional experience in archaeological fieldwork supervision and the ability to observe and instruct others in good and efficient field methodology
    • Experience with collection of field data, site recording, digital photography, artifact identification, GPS data collection, and mapping
    • Knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations, and demonstrate an established area of analytical expertise and/or archaeological research interest in the region
    • Ability to work independently as well as supervise small or large field crews
    • Detail oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines on fast-paced projects
    • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner
    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills
    • Experience preparing technical reports and site forms

     

    Technical Skills Required:

    • Maintain clear and detailed field notes and field form
    • Ability to use a GPS unit. Experience with GIS is a plus
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, and ability to use related computer systems and software
    • Experience using Terra Sync and GIS experience using ArcMap and other ESRI software in creating project and site maps as needed

     

    Physical Requirement: 

    • Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain
    • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds
