BRIC is currently seeking a Cultural Resource Field Director/Archaeologist in our Albuquerque NM office. This is a full-time position with benefits including medical, 401k, holidays/vacation time, and continuing education opportunities. The Field Director is part of an interdisciplinary team of archaeologists and environmental professionals. This position is an integral part of the Cultural Resource Program to manage cultural resources projects to achieve client objectives in quick and cost-effective manner. The Field Director will plan, conduct, lead and manage all phases of cultural resources projects including cultural resources surveys, site recording, excavations, monitoring, and other fieldwork duties. Duties include supervision of multiple field crews, organize fieldwork mobilization/demobilization, provide Quality Control for all data collected in the field and coordinate with Project Managers to ensure that projects are concluded on schedule and within budget. This position requires the individual to be highly organized, self-motivated, detail oriented, work well in a team-oriented setting and be able to work in a high-demand atmosphere. The Field Director must be knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations.
Qualifications include demonstrable expertise supervising all aspects of cultural resources survey, site recording and evaluations, and archaeological testing and data recovery. Candidates should be familiar with the completion of survey and excavation forms, operating GPS units with a data recorder, and conducting quality control/quality assurance reviews of data. The candidate will possess knowledge of federal cultural resources regulations, the ability to coordinate and communicate with agencies and clients and manage budgets and schedules. The Field Director will possess or the have the qualifications to obtain current permits with a variety of public land managing agencies, with emphasis on New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. This position will enjoy a variety of working conditions, including field and office work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Working directly under the Cultural Resources Program Director to plan and manage all phases of cultural resources projects
• Supervise multiple field crews in complex projects, including simultaneous work in several locations.
• Perform and oversee all archaeological projects and fieldwork, including survey; archaeological monitoring, testing and data recovery
• Supervise, direct, and instruct field and lab personnel as needed
• Conduct pre-field preparation including gear, accommodation, and transportation logistics.
• Training archaeological technicians in field methods, preparation of forms, and report writing
• Delegating tasks to junior staff
• Problem resolution in field and office settings
• Independently preparing, reviewing and editing complex technical documents for a full range of various cultural resources projects
• Ensure that the project scope of work is followed
• Implement research designs, treatment plans, and other CRM guidance
• Meeting project scope, schedule, and budget obligations
• Managing multiple projects simultaneously with strict deliverable deadlines
• Ensure that client and Company safety procedures are followed in the field
• Adherence to ethical business practices, professional standards, laws and regulations, and best practices assisting in cost proposals, achieve client objectives in quick and cost-effective manner
• Interacting with clients, officials and contractors as requested
• Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:
• Masters’ degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline
• Five years’ experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, prehistoric and historic site identification, documentation and assessment, testing, and monitoring
• Demonstrated experience in archaeological fieldwork supervision and the ability to observe and instruct others in good and efficient field methodology in a high paced environment
• Demonstrated experience with collection of field data, site recording, digital photography, artifact identification, GPS data collection, and mapping
• Knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations, and demonstrate an established area of analytical expertise and/or archaeological research interest in the region.
• Working knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’ Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation and familiarity with the survey guidelines for Southwest Region
• Ability to obtain permits at the Principal Investigator or Field Director level with NM BLM and Forest Service and permitted with the State of New Mexico and the Navajo Nation. Ability to obtain permits in nearby states (ID, OR, NV, AZ, and UT) is desirable
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, and ability to use related computer systems and software.
• Experienced with Trimble Geo Explorer units, Terra Sync and GIS experience using ArcMap and other ESRI software.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Individuals must have a proven background supervising and mentoring staff as well as frequently interacting and coordinating with clients and agency representatives in a decision-making role
• Ability to work independently as well as supervise small or large field crews
• Detail oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines on fast-paced projects
• Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner
Preferred Education/Experience Requirements:
• First consideration will be given to residents of New Mexico and Arizona with experience on the Navajo Nation
• Member of RPA
• Experience conducting ethnographic interviews
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience independently preparing, reviewing and editing complex technical documents for a full range of various cultural resources projects
• Demonstrated experience in assisting with preparing cultural resources sections for the National Environmental Policy Act other environmental planning documents is necessary
• First Aid and CPR certification and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training are preferred
Position will require extensive physical exertion, such as walking up to 10 hours a day at speeds of at least 3 mph over steep, uneven, heavily wooded, challenging terrain in outdoor heat /cold stress conditions and weather elements such as wind, snow or rain. Ability to carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment. Potential contact with poisonous plants, insects and animals. Individual must be able to conduct these tasks while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. This work may be performed in remote. rugged to extremely rugged terrain in extreme temperature ranges, often in uninhabited areas and may require camping. Some sedentary work is performed in an office setting.
